SCAM ALERT: What to do if you’re approached by a door-to-door salespersonMay 23rd, 2017
It’s that time of year. The days are longer, the weather is nicer, and people are out and about. This also means that door-to-door salespeople are out and about too. While not all door-to-door salespeople are bad, there are some who use deceitful sales tactics to trick consumers. As a homeowner, you should always be on alert and have your guard up when someone unexpected shows up at your home.
This issue of misleading traveling door-to-door sales teams is one that is affecting home security companies nationwide. Unfortunately, the ones who pay the price are the customers who fall for the scam. We hope that providing you with knowledge about these misleading tactics will help create a greater understanding of the danger.
While the summer door-knocking season isn’t slated to really begin until this Memorial Day Weekend, we’ve already heard from several of our customers that they have been approached by someone claiming they work for Select Security or claiming we are no longer in business. Too often, innocent homeowners, especially the elderly, are taken advantage of by these dishonest people. The encounters are all the same. A salesperson shows up at your door claiming to be with Select Security, another security company, or they identify themselves as an “authorized dealer”. They proceed to tell you that we’re going out of business, they’ve bought our business, or they need to perform an upgrade on your system. We want to reassure you that we will never show up to your home to perform a system upgrade without an appointment. We will also always have proper identification on us. As a member of the Electronic Security Association (ESA), we are required to provide identification and be licensed to sell in your area. Be sure to also watch out for high pressure sales tactics. Our sales team will always give you time to think through the deal and will make an appointment to return at a later date if you need some time to think about it. If a salesperson shows up at your door and uses high-pressure sales tactics, do not give in. Recently, we’ve spoken with a few of our customers who believed the salesperson who showed up at their door, and unfortunately, caused frustrating and costly situations.
If you are approached by someone who either claims to work for us or tries to convince you that we have gone out of business, please rest assured that these claims couldn’t be further from the truth. Firstly, we currently do not have a residential door-knocking program. Secondly, our commitment to our customers is stronger than ever. As a company, we are continuing to grow and add new branch offices and additional staff. Most notably, we’ve been recognized by Inc. 5000 as one of the fastest growing companies in the United States. We’re also committed to providing our customers with a world-class experience. In fact, we were recently nominated as one of three national finalists for the Installer of the Year award given out by a renowned trade magazine.
Here at Select Security, we make sure we alert our customers as soon as we hear of any deceitful practices going on. Should someone come to your door unexpectedly and claim they work for us, stay calm and don’t let them inside. You can always call us at 877-877-0345 to confirm that a salesperson works for Select Security.
